5 steps for storing outdoor furniture for winter

  1. Clean thoroughly. Before storing your outdoor furniture, use a mild soap and water solution to remove dirt, pollen, and debris. Allow them to dry completely to prevent mold and mildew.

  2. Apply a protective finish. Consider applying a weatherproof sealant or oil to wooden furniture to protect against moisture. Metal pieces can benefit from a rust-inhibiting spray to prevent corrosion.

  3. Disassemble if possible. Take apart any pieces that can be disassembled to save space and reduce the risk of damage. Put screws and other small parts in labeled Ziploc bags to make reassembly easier.

  4. Store in a dry place. If possible, store furniture in a garage, shed, or basement. If you don’t have indoor storage space, place them on a raised surface like pallets to keep them off the damp ground. If you are keeping your furniture outside over the winter, invest in high-quality, breathable covers that fit snugly over your items and are securely fastened to prevent them from blowing away. Store cushions and fabric pieces indoors.

  5. Check Regularly. Periodically inspect the stored furniture for signs of moisture or pests and address any issues promptly to prevent damage.
